Seven Signs Your Door Lock Needs Repair

Common warning signs of a failing door lock — sticking keys, loose handles, misaligned bolts — and what a locksmith checks in Altona Meadows.

Most locks fail gradually. Catching the warning signs early usually means a simple repair rather than a lockout or a full replacement.

1. The key sticks or needs jiggling

Worn pins, debris or a worn key are the usual causes. Do not force it — a snapped key inside the cylinder makes the job bigger.

2. The key turns but the bolt does not move

This often points to a broken internal cam or tailpiece. The lock needs attention before it stops opening at all.

3. The handle or lock feels loose

Loose fixing screws are easy to fix. Left alone, the movement wears the mechanism.

4. The bolt drags or will not extend fully

This is frequently a door alignment issue, not the lock. Doors shift with seasonal movement, and the strike plate may need adjusting.

5. Visible rust or corrosion

Salt air in bayside suburbs speeds up corrosion. Corroded internals can seize without warning.

6. The lock was forced or tampered with

Even if it still works, a forced lock may be weakened. Have it inspected.

7. You need to push or lift the door to lock it

That strain transfers to the bolt and wears it out.
